How Local Adventures came about
Meet Fabienne Wintle and Liz Ward
Fab and Liz are the founders of Tourism Tribe, Australia’s leading digital capability organisation for the tourism industry. Between them, they’ve helped thousands of tourism businesses across every state and territory improve their digital marketing, customer experience and business performance.
Local Adventures wasn’t born in a boardroom. It came from years of working alongside tourism operators across Australia and the Pacific, listening to their frustrations, their hopes for their businesses and their desire to build genuine relationships with travellers.
As digital specialists in the tourism industry, we’ve seen firsthand how the rise of large online travel platforms changed the landscape. They brought convenience, sure, but they also created distance between operators and travellers, between regions and their own stories, and between small businesses and the visitors who genuinely want to support them.
We watched great regional operators lose visibility simply because they weren’t willing or able to play the game of commissions, rankings or algorithms that favour volume over local character. We also heard from travellers who wanted to do the right thing: support local, find honest recommendations but ended up stuck sorting through generic search results, outdated reviews and promotional noise.
At the same time, AI has reshaped how people plan trips. Information is easier to access, but harder to trust. Personalisation is possible, but it’s only meaningful when grounded in real local insight.
